What would YOU have done? Be honest. 👇 50 yards in a rip current is no joke.
Ladies and gentlemen, it is time for your superior military leaders in action where a normal duty day turns into a catastrophe, and you military members still must lead. I am Christian to the hype man sledge, host of the Skiff International podcast, where we're continuing our 2026 USO Service Member of the Year series. Today we are highlighting Lance Corporal Matthew Garcia, United States Marine Corps. To Lance Corporal Garcia's family, wherever you are, you have a Marine to be proud of. Stance of approval certified. Battle tested Marine Corps approved. USO Marine Corps Service Member of the Year 2026. The Marine Corps needs water survival, open ocean rescue, and split second decision making while everybody else is still processing the situation. No problem. As Corporal Garcia calls that a Tuesday. So why is he so special and what makes him different? Well, let me go ahead and hype that up for you. Picture this. You're at the beach, it's off duty, water looks fine, the vibe is calm, cool, chilling like a villain. Then a rip current and a fellow Marine is getting pulled out 50 plus yards offshore. Heavy surf, the kind of surf that does not care about who you are, what rank you hold, or how many pull-ups you knocked out this morning. And the lifeguards, freaking nowhere to be found. I guess they're coming. And you know how dangerous these rip currents are. They have pulled trained swimmers under. They don't care about your PT scores, new standard or old standard. They don't care about your combat deployments. Right now, a fellow Marine is getting swallowed by the ocean. Again, Poseidon is on the rise. Again, about a half football field away. Heavy surf. Still, no freaking lifeguards on deck, man. Are they coming? I guess not, man. But you know how I feel about these things. Panic is easy, hesitation is fatal. It's a bird. It's a freaking plane. No, it's Lance Corporal Garcia already in the water doing his thing. He freaking moved. No calculation, no waiting for somebody else to go first. He freaking moved. 50 plus yards in heavy surf with the rip current working against him like a shaving waiver up in here. Got to that marine, stabilized him, kept his head up, brought him back to shore before the lifeguards even arrived. The dude was like, bro, I already, I got it, I got it, I got it. It's good to go. Garcia looked at the ocean and said, nah, nah, today. Poseidon. Marine rescue mission success. Ascended leadership moment. Garcia was off duty, y'all. Freaking off duty. This was not a training exercise. This was no evaluation, no evaluator watching, no performance report on the line. This is his pure character, pure, uncut Marine Corps character. A Marine is alive today because Garcia moved in where it mattered the most. Superior leadership is not about fearlessness, it's about acting in despite of fear. You, SO, 2026 Marine Corps Service Member of the Year. Every single word of that title is earned. Lance Corporal Garcia and to all the service members out there doing what you do every day. Thank you for your service, especially during these trying times. But everybody outside of this don't want to hear that. They just want to dance. So, yo, NATO, put some beat on this video. And while you guys are dancing out there, subscribe here and the Skiff International podcast in the description below if you want to hear more about superior and everyday leaders in action. Hype signing off. And of course, shout out to my man NATO.
